The goal of the HSU MMSP is to scientifically investigate every stranded marine mammal in northern California. We operate as a member of the National Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program (MMHSRP) in the West Coast Region and work closely with our neighboring stranding programs to advance science, education and public awareness of marine mammals through response and detailed examination of marine mammal carcasses.
Since 1962, the Humboldt State University Vertebrate Museum has gathered valuable information on stranded marine mammals in northern California and shared that with researchers from around the country. These data, along with that from our partners, have contributed to our understanding of marine mammal disease, population fluctuations, fisheries interactions and the relationship between human activities and ocean health.
