OSGeo

OSGeo is a organization that supports open source geospatial software.

They have put together a large collection of software into a single release, OSGeoLive. The software includes enterprise level software that would normally require a "server" to run on. Since we can run this software in a "virtual machine", we can develop geospatial applications without a server.

There is a huge number of applications installed with OSGeoLive and I recommend you spend sometime browsing through them. Below is a list of the most important for our class.

• QGIS: GIS Application with similar features to ArcGIS
• GeoServer: A GIS Server to provide dynamic maps on the Internet
• PostgreSQL with PostGIS: A spatially aware high-performance, enterprise-level, relational database
• R: Statistics Application
• TileMill: Program to create pyramids of tiles to increase the performance of dynamic web maps
